Becoming a Canadian citizen is the final step toward fully establishing your life in Canada. Citizenship allows you to take part in the country’s democratic process, access one of the world’s strongest passports, and build a lasting connection with Canada. It is an important milestone that goes beyond permanent residence, offering greater stability, security, and new opportunities.

WHO CAN APPLY?

You may be eligible for Canadian citizenship if you meet the following requirements:

Good standing: Applicants must not be subject to any prohibition, such as certain criminal convictions, that would make them ineligible for citizenship.

Permanent resident status: Applicants must hold valid permanent resident status in Canada.

Physical presence in Canada: Applicants must have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days (three years) during the five years before applying.

Time spent in Canada as a temporary resident or protected person may count as half a day toward physical presence, up to a maximum of 365 days.

Time spent outside Canada while serving as a Crown servant, or as a family member of one, may also count toward the physical presence requirement.

Language proficiency: Applicants between 18 and 54 years old must demonstrate proficiency in English or French.

Knowledge of Canada: Applicants between 18 and 54 years old must pass the citizenship test, demonstrating their knowledge of Canada’s history, values, institutions, and symbols.
